Major/Essential Functions
  • Builds and sustains an independent, externally funded research program
  • Embraces the vision of the new Center of Emphasis in Diabetes & Metabolism, engages in the Center’s and Department’s activities, and interacts with other members of the Center, Department and Institution in a collegial, team-oriented fashion
  • Participates in team-taught courses in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and/or the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine
  • Mentors medical and graduate students in research
  • Engages in service to the academic and regional community
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable institutional, state and federal policies and procedures, especially those pertaining to research
  • Adheres to all institutional and departmental policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine’s Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility
  • For M.D. applicants, clinical service is an option

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in studying Mexican-American or Hispanic populations
  • Experience relevant to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cancer or sleep-disordered breathing
  • Experience in addressing health disparities in underserved populations
  • M.D. applicants will need to be board-certified and to obtain Texas medical licensure

Required Qualifications
Academic degree as defined by the academic unit and as appropriate for the position held. Demonstrated record of effectiveness as a teacher, a record of peer reviewed publication and/or peer-reviewed creative activity which has contributed to the discipline or field of study, to the candidate’s intellectual and artistic development, and to the quality of the academic enterprise; a record of professional service appropriate to the discipline; promise of growth in teaching and research or artistic and creative activity.

Required Qualifications
  • M.D., Ph.D., M.D.-Ph.D., or an equivalent degree with appropriate postgraduate training
  • Epidemiology research experience in one of the following areas: the development and investigation of community-based cohorts, with the goals of identifying the determinants of disease risk, morbidity and mortality; assessing the efficacy of early screening and prevention programs; evaluating community- or clinic-based interventions
  • Experience in addressing health disparities in underserved populations
