Major/Essential Functions
  • Performs clinical duties in a hospital laboratory to include clinical test interpretation, quality control, and test implementation related to clinical microbiology testing
  • Assists with a reference laboratory by helping to set up new laboratory tests
  • Offers clinical guidance and scientific advice to other health professionals on the selection, performance and interpretation of clinically relevant investigations to facilitate the diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and understanding of health and disease
  • Ensures quality of services provided in all aspects of clinical microbiology and analytical methods and instrumentation/automation by overseeing selection/recommendation, implementation and performance evaluation of analytical methods and instrumentation, quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement measures, and adherence to governmental and regulatory (CLIA, CAP, TJC) guidelines and standard laboratory practices
  • Initiates and participates in clinical audit of laboratory services
  • Serves in teaching activities for medical students, residents, and laboratory employees
  • Supports microbiology instruction and training for pathology residents
  • Participates in research and/or scholarly activities
  • Participates in committees and other administrative duties as assigned
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine’s Declaration of Faculty Professionalism Responsibility
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and departmental billing regulations
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in clinical laboratory microbiology operations related to automation, clinical laboratory test validation studies, quality management, interpretation of clinical test results, and/or related laboratory consultation with health care providers
  • Experience in teaching medical students and residents
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations
  • Regional or emerging national reputation for the rank of Associate Professor or higher

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in microbiological, chemical or clinical laboratory sciences with board certification from the American Board of Medical Microbiology or board certification from the American Board of Clinical Chemistry; or M.D. with board certification from the American Board of Pathology in Clinical Pathology (or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology) with subspecialty board certification in Medical Microbiology or Chemistry
  • Unrestricted Texas medical license or eligible for Texas medical licensure for physician candidates
