Position Description
Under general supervision, responsible for utilizing instrument tracking system to dispense and retrieve dental instruments and equipment. Ensures central sterilization and clinic dispensary operations practices are completed according to established patient care standards.

Major/Essential Functions
Monitoring Supplies and materials: Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies, equipment and materials for the clinic and/or preclinical areas. Unpack, store, label and distribute items as needed. Assists with data entry, ordering and sorting clinical supplies. Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of dental materials, their use, maintenance and storage.
Sterilization Preparation: Responsible for collecting used instruments and transports them to central sterilization for autoclaving. Package and wrap pre-sterilized instruments. Clean and lubricate dental hand pieces/accessories, Instrument cassettes and bur blocks. Appropriately prepares all dental instrumentation and hand pieces for manual or mechanical decontamination to ensure items are not damaged during processing. Appropriately selects/uses correct cleaning methods (manual/mechanical) and cleaning chemicals required for each item. Accurately loads/unloads and operated washer, sonic cleaners and cart washer to ensure items are clean and safe for handling. Verifies correct cycle parameters. Recognizes faulty equipment operations and refers to supervisor, lead or director. Disinfect mobile carts so that instruments can be transported to clinic locations in a timely manner.
Responsible for appropriately selecting and using correct type and method of packaging dental instrumentation, equipment and supplies. Packaging dental instrumentation, equipment and supplies to prevent potential damage and assist in proper sterilant penetration. 
Instrumentation Preparation and Distribution: Responsible for preparing various dental procedure packaging and other consumable packaging. Responsible for issuing sterile reusable instruments to operatories and clinical units.
Accurately identified, inspect and assembles dental instrumentation and hand pieces for all clinic areas to ensure availability and safe efficient operation during patient care procedures. Recognizes nonfunctional equipment or general instrumentation and refers to supervisor, lead or director. Efficiently selects instrumentation, equipment and supplies and prepares delivers case carts to ensure all items have integrity and readily available for patient care to students, faculty and clinical staff in clinic and/or simulation center areas in a timely fashion. Prepares specialized instrument set-ups for students, faculty and clinical staff to be used during dental patient treatment. Follows all appropriate protocols for materials and equipment handling.
Maintains Organization: Maintains, disinfects and sterilizes equipment per protocols. Maintains the organization, cleanliness and general appearance of the dispensary space and related storage facilities
Uses computer systems daily to check equipment in and out of dispensary areas. Identify instruments and monitor all cassettes for completeness of content. Responsible for checking equipment to ensure it is working properly. Maintains annual inventory of instruments. Has knowledge of instrument set up and dispensing for students, along with an understanding of instruments used by students. Notifies the appropriate clinical supervisor or faculty regarding items that have not been returned or are broken.

Consistently verifies accuracy of all tasks performed and participated in process improvement efforts to increase customer satisfaction. Routinely updates self knowledge on processing practice, procedures and products while maintaining certifications to be a resource regarding dispensary and sterilization for dental students and staff
Trains existing and/or new employees in the registration and processing of patients or in any other job related duties.Provides cross-training to staff within different clinic areas. Coordinate with the preclinical and clinical staff to maintain the supplies required for the courses and simulation center. Consistently verifies accuracy of all tasks performed and participated in process improvement efforts to increase customer satisfaction. Routinely updates self
knowledge on processing practice, procedures and products while maintaining certifications to be a resource regarding dispensary and sterilization for dental students and staff.
Performs other duties as directed by supervisor. Flexibility and adaptability to accept and perform other duties assigned by supervisor. Desired Qualifications:
  • Minimal 1 year working in a dental office or a dental dispensary
  • Knowledge of computer skills, email, excel and word
  • Exceptional attention to detail, the ability to troubleshoot and verify the accuracy of work
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment
  • Proficient professional communication skills
  • Ability to work in a busy work environment
  • Knowledge of infection control, OSHA, HIPAA and EHR
  • Knowledge of current dental technologies and materials
  • Willing to work flex hours, some holidays are possible
  • Bilingual: English and Spanish preferred

Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • One year experience in customer service, central sterilization, receiving, storing, issuing, and accounting for dental materials and property preferred
Position Specific
  • Dental assistant certification by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners and CPR certification required
  • Sterilization certificate (if not currently, certification for sterile processing required within 12 months from hire-in date
  • AHCSMM or CBSPD certification)
  • Ability to maintain continuing education (CE) as required by state or and Texas Tech
