Major/Essential Functions
  • Provides leadership of the Department of Pediatrics
  • Develops, maintains and expands high quality pediatric services and programs at the affiliated hospitals of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (University Medical Center of El Paso, El Paso Children’s Hospital, Hospitals of Providence-Transmountain and Memorial campuses)
  • Serves as clinical chief of pediatric services at UMC of El Paso and may serve in a leadership role at El Paso Children’s Hospital
  • Cultivates a reputation for educational excellence in undergraduate education and residency training programs and successfully recruits additional faculty to support the academic, clinical and research service mission of the department
  • Develops and maintains a well-balanced department in education, service, research and scholarship
  • Serves as a mentor and role model for faculty, residents, staff and students
  • Cultivates strong relationships within the El Paso community
  • Develops personal and professional credibility within the department, across the health sciences center, and within the community
  • Leads strategic planning and implementation, and fosters excellence in each of the missions for the department in which each of the missions of scholarship, education, patient care, clinical services and academically-related public service are enhanced
  • Ensures a departmental culture that emphasizes collaboration and mutual trust and respect with a shared vision for the future that drives priorities and a sense of mutual responsibility and accountability for performance across the department emphasizing an environment of professionalism, and confidentiality of all clinical information
  • Enhances department morale, communication, mutual respect, inclusiveness, and creativity
  • Ensures the department achieves high performance levels in financial performance, education, high quality clinical services, scholarship/research and collaborations with colleagues and partner institutions
  • Adheres to institutional and departmental policies and procedures
  • Ensures compliance with HIPAA and billing regulations and requirements
  • Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with PLFSOM’s Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration, public administration, medical management, or equivalent degree
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Professor
  • A distinguished record of clinical care, teaching and scholarship with national stature
  • Experience in leading educational programs
  • Experience in the development and successful implementation of new clinical programs and services
  • Track record of leading a diverse body of faculty, staff and learners
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility
  • Collaborative leadership skills and ability to relate well within the department and the community
  • Experience in recruiting, retaining, mentoring and developing highly qualified faculty, staff, and residents

Required Qualifications
  • MD/DO degree or equivalent
  • Texas medical license or eligibility for Texas medical license
  • Current board certification by the American Board of Pediatrics
  • Qualified for faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or higher
  • Leadership experience as a chair, program director, vice chair, division chief, or director in an academic pediatric department
  • Current experience as an actively practicing pediatrician in an academic medical center
