Position Description
Performs specialized work in the planning, conducting and/or supervising of original research at TTUHSC. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Performs staining of cells/tissues for immunofluorescence analysis and digital imaging of stained cells and tissues using microscopes, including, including confocal microscope.
  • Biochemical assays and methods, including kinase assay, ELISA, RIA, western blot, and immunoprecipitation analysis, etc. Analysis of expression genes and proteins.
  • Participate in research data collection by performing highly skilled experiments using mammalian and bacterial cells, Including cultured primary neurons. Cell transfection and infection with siRNA, antisense oligos, plasmids and viral vectors. Perform recombinant DNA techniques (such as cloning, PCR amplification), Isolation of nucleic acids, including genomic and plasmid DNAs, and proteins, including recombinant proteins from cells (bacteria or mammalian cells) for biochemical and molecular analysis.
  • Breeding of animals for desired genotypes and genotyping of mice using PCR and southern blotting. Necropsy, tissue processing for histology.
  • Protein isolation, purification, identification, and quantitation using SDS-PAGE, western blot, and immunoprecipitation analysis.
  • Bioinformatics analysis of microRNAs and mRNAs expression using appropriate software. Cloning of genomic and cDNA for ectopic expression of genes at protein and mRNA levels, and microRNA expression analysis.
  • Collect and maintain a prudent record of all experiments performed. Prepare scientific data, carry out data analysis and prepare manuscripts for publication. Participation and presentation of data in weekly lab meetings.
  • Responsible for day to day maintenance of lab and lab equipment, including ordering supplies, washing glassware, etc.
  • Guides and directs junior technicians and students.
  • Other duties are required to ensure the smooth operation of the research lab and to facilitate the conduct of  research.
  • Adhere to all TTUHSCEP policies, procedures and processes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in the general area of biomedical sciences with knowledge and some expertise in the fields of cell biology and neurosciences, including neurological disorders.
  • Prior experience (1 to 2 years) working with related laboratory research methods for conducting biomedical research, including confocal microscopy.
  • 1 to 2 years of experience and skills working with laboratory research animals, including breeding and genotyping of genetically modified mouse models or willing to work with laboratory research animals.
  • Evidence of having 1 to 2 years of experience in independent supervisory and organizational skills required for a biomedical research laboratory.
  • Experience using research related software, including, Microsoft Excel, Graphpad Prism, NIH ImageJ, Abode Illustrator, and Photoshop.
