Position Description
Employees in this classification are responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in an assigned specialty or sub-specialty outpatient clinic. Work is performed under the direction of a licensed staff nurse and/or physician as part of a total health care team in providing complete evaluations to patients. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions, necessitating a high degree of contact with patient, families and clinic personnel.

Major/Essential Functions
Reviews and updates patient's charts.
Responsible for assisting physician with
physical examinations and various
specialized procedures.
Obtains specimens for laboratory tests.
Records end-results of lab tests, x-rays, etc. into patient charts.
Administers medications as ordered by the
physician and monitors patient for adverse
reactions.
Takes patient vital signs.
Supervises/Trains ancillary personnel or
students. 
Instructs patient and family regarding
continued patient care.
Participates in audits, surveys, research, PI, etc.
Stocks and cleans exam rooms, nurse's station and work station.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education:
  • Completion of a Board of Nursing accredited program of vocational nursing or scheduled to complete a program of vocational nursing within 120 days of applying for a position
License/Certification:
  • Current Vocational Nursing license in the state of Texas or the attainment of a temporary permit from the Board of Nursing to practice vocational nursing pending full licensure in the state of Texas. New graduates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX- PN) on the first attempt
Experience:
  • No experience required
Position Specific Qualifications:
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • Good spelling and penmanship ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form
  • Willing to work extended hours, weekends, and occasional holidays
  • Certified in CPR and maintains certification
  • Maintain 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education over a two-year period is expected for other than new graduates
  • Familiarity with medical equipment and basic computer skills
  • Some knowledge on EMR
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
