Position Description
Employees in this classification provide support to the Ophthalmology Specialty Clinics by performing preliminary eye examinations and routine tests, and by assuring the steady and even flow of patients through the clinic. Work is performed within established guidelines. Works under direct supervision of ophthalmologist when performing patient-care related duties. Works under only general supervision in all other duties. Employees in this classification normally have no delegated supervisory responsibility.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Greets all patients and takes a brief history for physicians to review. Documents chief complaint, information on ocular history, allergies, medications, pain, abnormal findings and any other pertinent information, as necessary, according to visit type, test or procedures performed
  • Performs various diagnostic testing, which may include, visual fields, dark adaptometry, checks pupil response to light and watches speed with which pupils constrict:checks for afferent pupillary defect, measures central visual field using Amsler Grid; measures and records distance and near visual acuity, electro-oculogram testing, measures and records intraocular pressure, using applanation tonometry, performs Humphrey visual field testing; refers patients for further testing where appropriate, tests color vision; depth perception (stereopsis); and screens for presence of ocular motility disorders
  • Prepares and reviews patient medical record for completeness prior to patient’s scheduled appointments.  Assures any required forms or reports are available for the appointment
  • Ensures all rooms, lenses and equipment are clean and in an orderly fashion. Stocks all exam rooms/procedure rooms, as necessary. Reviews supplies for expiration dates
  • Responds to incoming calls related to patient care.  Documents pertinent information, and routes call, as appropriate
  • Provides education and educational materials, as required and keeps an adequate stock on hand at all times. Makes arrangements to obtain educational materials as approved by physicians and/or supervisor

Occasional Duties
  • Assists ophthalmologists in the performance of ultrasonography scans and argon laser treatments.  Provides adequate instructions to each patient before and during each test performed. Instills eye drops under physcian's direction
  • Prepares patients for special procedures to include: minor surgery, reinforces consents for surgical procedures and obtains the signature from patient.  Schedules general/minor surgeries for all physicians in the OR book, Weblink and Sharepoint. Coordinates surgeries with appropriate outside facilities, ASU, and clinic department (scheduling and billing). Informs patient of instructions or information regarding surgical procedure. Sets up proper equipment and supplies required for each specific procedure. Assists physicians with minor procedures
  • Prepares instruments for sterilization. Assures equipment is functioning and instruments are readily available to physician
  • Maintains accurate stock of all medication utilized in the clinic and by the physicians to include those specific for daily use and those used for special/minor procedures
  • Ensures accurate stock and maintenance of all sample contact lenses. Provides instruction to patient on proper use of lenses
  • Prepares clinic statistics for various reports

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Current Ophthalmic Assistant certification OR eligible for certification and complete certification within twelve months of hire
  • At least one year of experience working in an ophthalmic or optometry setting
  • One year of work experience as an LVN may substitute
