Position Description
Provides assistance to the Pathologist in the preparation, dissection, and completion of work with autopsy and surgical specimens.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Assists with autopsies including external examinations, on-site organ inspections, evisceration or removal of internal organs, and dissection of organs and tissue.
  • Prepares tissues for gross examination.
  • Performs dissection of all tissues with dictation of a gross description.
  • Assists pathologists with dictation and dissection of tissues as requested.
  • Submits specimens for histologic examination after gross dissection; must be familiar with histology requirements such as specimen thickness and length of adequate fixation.
  • Performs related procedures including obtaining cultures, taking photographs, and saving tissue. Ensures proper labeling and storing of all specimens.
  • Assists pathologist and/or resident in performing autopsies and with frozen section examination of tissue specimens.
  • Performs gross dissection and removal of body organs including the brain. Cleans, prepares, and transports the body after autopsy completed.
  • Ensures that spaces and instruments are properly cleaned and maintained.
  • Maintains all instruments and cryostat in clean and working order and ensures servicing or replacement if needed.
  • Assists pathologist(s) with preparation of clinical summary as requested.
  • Ensures accurate patient information, accession numbers and records on all surgical, autopsy and bone marrow specimens.
  • Maintains filing system for rapid and accurate retrieval of all blocks and slides.
  • Accessions specimens into laboratory information system and accurately codes (CPT and ICD-9) all surgical specimens.
  • Dictates or records data on autopsy findings.
  • Obtains biological specimens for analysis such as blood cultures, viral cultures, and toxicological material.
  • Summarizes the clinical history of specimens.
  • Assists the Pathologist in preparation of preliminary anatomic diagnosis.
  • Selects and submits tissue sections for microscopic examination (that is, frozen and permanent sections for light, electron, and fluorescent microscopy) for both postmortem examinations and for examination of human surgical specimens.
  • Describes and completes dissection of surgical specimens.

Required Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from 4-year College or university plus 4 years related experience or combination of education and experience equal to 8 years. Certification as Pathology Assistant from NAACLS accredited training program will substitute for 2 years experience.
