Position Description
This position is responsible for providing primary ambulatory medical care. This includes examination of patients, ordering x-rays and laboratory tests to help make an accurate diagnosis, and planning and execution of treatment. The person in this position works in a busy, pressured environment and sees a high volume of patients, as needed by TTUHSC.

Major/Essential Functions
As a Relief Physician who works on a PRN basis:
1.  Performs essential duties in the toxicology division and will be responsible for the medical direction of the West Texas Regional Poison Center; the Southwest Center for Pediatric Environmental Health and Medical Toxicology Consultation Services at University Medical Center and El Paso Childrens' Hospital.
2.  At the West Texas Regional Poison Center (WTRPC) is on call 24/7 to provide answers to questions about accidental and intentional exposures, poison prevention, medication identification and safety, product recalls and many other important topics relating to poisonings.
3.  May be responsible for Emergency Medicine residents that are scheduled for their rotations at the West Texas Regional Poison Center.   Also responsible for residents from other specialties performing their rotations.  Provides orientation regarding functioning of the poison center and operating the computerized Poisonindex system.
4.  Provides bedside consultations to patients at affiliated hospitals.
5.  On occasion will provide oversight, conduct and collaborate with investigators on research activities related to medical toxicology, education and patient safety.
6.  May participate in medical research projects related to toxicology.
7.  May develop curriculum and evaluation processes in medical toxicology, didactics as well as lectures for Emergency Medicine residents or other specialties. 
8.  Knowledge and adherence of institutional departmental safety policies and procedures; attends mandatory training provides by TTUHSC El Paso.
9.  Demonstrates professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility.

Preferred Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate from approved accredited School of Medicine with an M.D. or D.O. degree, at least 3 years of post graduate training in emergency medicine.   Successful completion of ACGME accredited residency program in Emergency Medicine.  Licensed to practice medicine in the Sate of Texas or have the ability to tranfer license to Texas.   Certificate or license for prescribing controlled substances.  Certification:  American Academy of Clinical Toxicology OR American College of Medical Toxicology.  At least 2 years of experience in medical toxicology. 

PREFERRED:  Board certified or eligible for board certification in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine.   Experience in teaching residents and medical students.  Evidence of growth in clinical, teaching and research activities related to the specialty.   Knowledge of Medical Spanish.   AC:LS/PALS/ATLS training.
