Major/Essential Functions
1.  Selects and utilizes proper E/M level of service and procedure CPT codes for physician fees resulting in appropriate reimbursement.   Validates assigned Evaluation and Management codes based on health record documentation using the CMS 1995 E/M documentation guidelines.  Applies the official CPT and current code set & ICD-10 CM coding guidelines in accordance with payer standards.   Applies CMS teaching physician documentation guidelines contained in the CMS Internet Only manual 100-04, Chapter 12, Section 100.
2.  Must be able to read emergency medicine physician electronic medical records and abstract code 90% of the time.
3.  On a periodic basis accesses coding websites for educational purposes and to use their forum to address or discuss coding issues.
4.  Develops and recommends systems to capture professional fees and proper codes for reimbursement that can result in increased collection rates and a reduction in the number of claim denials and rejections. 
5.  Checks e-mail periodically for specific instructions, updates in the Coding/Billing Division.  Acknowledges e-mail with a response. 
6.  Abides by the TTUHSC Compliance Plan. Independently recognizes codes and problems as they arise.  Researches and resolves issues and reports to the supervisor.  Remains up to date on coding and reimbursement issues and report findings to the above mentioned.   Implements information and instruction given after getting approval from the supervisors.  Keeps audit of physician compliance up to date. 
7.  Meets with the Coding/Billing Unit Manager, Sr. Clinical Dept Administrator and Chairman on an as needed basis to update on coding stats, any coding issues and concerns.
8.  Runs fee tickets verifying demographic and insurance information from hospital electronic medical records system to TTUHSC medical practice system as directed by the Unit Manager.
9.  Enters information on patients who were seen through the Emergency Department at the University Medical Center by using the TTUHSC CBIZ system.  At the same time enters patients that are not registered. 
10.  Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of coding and reimbursement experience that includes procedural and diagnosis coding.  Certification:  current certification through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in the following areas:  Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P); Certified Coding Specialists (CCS); Certified in Healthcare Privacy (CHP); Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); Certified Coding Associate OR Current certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) in the following areas: Certified Professional Coder (CPC); Certified Professional Coder Hospital (CPH-H).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in the specialty of Emergency Medicine physician coding.  Advanced skills in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).  Knowledge in the use of the Texas Tech Medical Practice System CBIZ and UMC Electronic Medical Record system Cerner.  Knowledge of Encoder program or any coding based system.  Advanced understanding of medical terminology and body systems/anatomy and physiology and concepts of disease processes; knowledge of inpatient and outpatient medical records processing and federal and state reimbursement regulations.
