Position Description
Performs routine compliance activities related to research compliance, including human subjects, animal care, conflict of interest and/or export control. This position is reserved for use in departments that have institutional oversight of research.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Serves as main administrative support staff for the TTUHSC El Paso Institutional Review Board (IRB) #2, coordinating logistics for all scheduled meetings, to include yearly Outlook invites for members, yearly room reservations, audiovisual requests, catering, and processing of all related work orders.
  • Provides formal and informal regulatory, ethical, and methodological advice and assistance to research personnel in preparation of applications for research proposals involving human subjects. Implements and maintains processes to support this.
  • Uses the iRIS system and the IRB module to provide initial screening of all research submitted to the IRB #2. Communicates with all research personnel as necessary regarding required/suggested changes needed prior to IRB review. Communicates information to reviewers as needed.
  • Reviews IRB #2 submissions and advises submitters regarding compliance with federal and state laws, regulations, institutional policies and guidelines.
  • Prepares correspondence for IRB #2 that conveys IRB deliberations and contingencies for approval of research activities involving human subjects, utilizing the federal regulations criteria for approval.
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains the IRB #2 agenda on a daily basis. Ensures that all items assigned are processed in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Creates IRB #2 meeting minutes that summarize the main conversation and any controverted issues/resolutions utilizing the federal regulations criteria for approval. Ensures that meeting minutes are sent out no later than submission deadline day
  • Provides oversight to ensure that investigators have completed proper training, prior to approval of protocols by the IRB Ensures that Spanish translations of documents (consent, questionnaires, recruitment material, etc.) have been submitted for review as applicable.
  • Provides onboarding and orientation training for new IRB #2 members and ongoing educational activities for current members, as applicable. Implements and maintains processes to support this.
  • Creates and finalizes appointment and reappointment letters, and member agreements for the IRB #2. Ensures that member training requirements are being maintained and committee rosters are updated. Implements and maintains processes to support this.
  • Ensures that the IRB website is maintained up to date by conducting periodic reviews.
  • Reviews and maintains the IRB regulatory committee files in the shared drive.
  • Serves as the designated backup for the Institutional Review Board (IRB) #1. May provide assistance to Conflict of Interest in Research Committee (COIRC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), and Institutional Animal Care Use Committee (IACUC), as needed.
  • Assist with other duties, as assigned by the Sr. Director of the Office of Research.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a research setting.
  • Ability to apply and interpret federal and state regulations related to research.
  • Knowledge of University of Miami CITI program.
  • Knowledge of Excel databases.
  • Medical terminology coursework/experience preferred.
  • Willingness become a Certified IRB. 
  • Professional (CIP) status within 3 years of hire.
  • Proficient in Spanish preferred.
