Position Description
Performs administrative and supervisory work related to the management of a specialized unit; usually reports to a Director. Responsibilities encompass the coordination of activities involved in the management of the unit or support services. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on attainment of established goals; may be responsible for supervision of all employees assigned to the unit of responsibility.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Answers reference questions, provides general library instruction,
    conducts library orientations, teaches seminars, and
    troubleshoots computer problems.
  • Responsible for operation of the MEB branch library in the
    absence of the Managing Director.
  • Teaches classes, seminars, and orientations for students,
    faculty, and community members.
  • Creates, maintains, and updates of El Paso Library LibGuide pages as needed.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates a Specialist IV.
  • Conducts online computer searches using electronic
    databases.
  • Assists in library outreach projects and exhibits on behalf of
    NLM and NNLM.
  • Acts as the liaison to assigned departments for collection
    development purposes. Recommends monographs for
    purchase and aids in weeding the libraries’ collections.
  • Produces statistical reports.

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution. At least three years of experience in
a health sciences library environment, and extensive library teaching experience. Experience working in an electronic
only or virtual library.

Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required. Familiarity with traditional and electronic public services roles and
activities. Demonstrable supervisory skills. Demonstrable skills in computer usage, including the ability to teach
computer skills. Demonstrable teaching skills. Knowledge of collection development in an academic health sciences
center. Knowledge of serials acquisition and control. Knowledge of interlibrary loan and document delivery processes.
Ability to use both PC compatible and Macintosh computer systems.
